Jubileo is a nonprofit organization providing education, food, healthcare, and community
services for those in need in Santiago, Dominican Republic. The mission began here in 2012 and has grown exponentially over the past 12 years. Our primary focus is in the impoverished community of Pontezuela, an area of the city with a large Haitian population.
A decade ago, the Dominican government stripped citizenship from Haitians born in the
Dominican Republic, creating a large stateless population out of Haitians who grew up in the
DR. The continuing crisis of gang violence in Haiti has also created a flood of immigration into the DR and the government has a strict deportation policy. As a result, many Haitians live in poverty and fear, unable to get jobs or send their children to school, and afraid even to enter the Dominican medical system. The situation in Haiti makes returning there extremely dangerous.
Jubileo seeks to meet the basic human rights needs of an extremely vulnerable population. Our main focus is education, which we consider the key ingredient to breaking the cycle of poverty and lifting families out of crisis to security. As a Christian organization associated with Multicultural Community Church, we believe spiritual development and the power of Christ are foundational elements to breaking this cycle. As such, all of our programs address not only material needs but spiritual ones as well.
Four key priorities we have identified where we can expand our programs and enhance their effectiveness.
1) Teacher salaries
2) Feeding program
3) Music Education
4)Sports Programming
